Tomorrow's party!!

Just wanted to remind everyone that our holiday party is still on for tomorrow, Tuesday, December 21st from 1:30-3 in the afternoon.  If you have not done so yet, please remember to send in a wrapped activity book, crayons/colored pencils/markers for our book exchange.  Please send a book appropriate for a boy if your child is a boy, or a book appropriate for a girl if your child is a girl.

Oops! Forgot!

Sorry!  I forgot to mention this in the last email.  I checked some of the kids on spelling concepts that were taught throughout the year.  I am using this to help students practice skills that may be still confusing to them.

Group A will be having a spelling test on Monday with the same words from last week.  I want to make sure they "get" the concept and most kids in this group didn't do so hot on the test last week.  All other groups do not have spelling words this week, so there will not be a test.

As mentioned at conferences, I will be retesting all the kids with the 25 word "test" to help me dig a little deeper.  It will pinpoint exactly what concepts are solid and which need to be retaught or practiced some more.  After the new year, some spelling groups might change due to the progress of the kids.  I hope this clarifies any confusion over spelling and I will update you as to how your child did after the first of the year.

Thanks!!

Important Info

There are a couple important bits of info for the week...

Tomorrow is a Switzer Spirit Day, have your child wear their Santa hat, Rudolph antlers, Christmas headbands, or anything else that might show their Christmas spirit.  Also, tomorrow afternoon we will be having a game day celebration  to celebrate filling the marble jar.  Please send in a board game or card game for your child to play in the afternoon.  We will be doing no video games this time around.

Also, please don't forget that Tuesday will be our Christmas party.  Send in a wrapped activity book with crayons, markers or colored pencils.  We will be doing an exchange on Tuesday during our party.  If you can send them in on Monday, that would be great!

Lastly, your child brought home a math review for the math test tomorrow.  They are only required to do the red side of each paper.

Thanks so much!!

Christmas Surprise!

It is hard to believe but the holiday season is almost here!  With Thanksgiving just weeks away, Christmas will be here before we know it!

In 2nd grade, we make an extra special gift for our parents.  This gift is a secret gift, so please don't ask them what they are making!  We have told them to keep this gift to themselves- so no trying to get it out of them!! ;0)  We want you to be surprised on Christmas Day!

To help cover the cost of the gift, we are asking each family to send in $5.50 by Monday, November 15th.  The money will go towards the making of this great surprise.  Sorry for the short notice, however, if we have our order in to the company by November 19th, we save on Shipping and Handling charges, plus we get a 10% discount on the whole order!  Too good of a deal to pass up!!  Thanks for understanding!!!

Bi-weekly Notes

Due to conferences and report cards, your child will not be receiving a bi-weekly note for the next couple weeks.  They will resume the week after Thanksgiving.  Thanks for your understanding and cooperation!

I look forward to seeing all of you next week for conferences.  Please remember to send back the signed portion of the note so that I know the scheduled time works for you.  Thanks again!

Soldier Pics

This is a little late, but here are some pics of our class and Mrs. Nicolai's class with some of the supplies for the soldiers! :)

Updates

Students received a homework assignment today to use the research sheet to find some facts about an animal of their choice. Please help them to complete this. They do not need to do the topic sentence, we will do that together in class. They just need the habitat fact, what the animal eats and 2 facts of their choice. Students can use, but are not limited to the information sheet I provided. They can use the internet, books or other resources to find their information. Please send fact sheet back by Wednesday.

Here is the latest Scoop and November's calendar.

Enjoy your day off tomorrow. See you on Wednesday!

Classrooms Care

We had the opportunity to watch the Taylor Swift webinar today at school.  She challenged students and classrooms to take the Classrooms Care Challenge.  It is a literacy campaign to motivate students to read, as well as teach them the importance of giving.

Every student is challenged to read 10 books at home by Dec. 17th.  When they have finished, Scholastic Book Clubs and its charity partners will donate ONE MILLION BOOKS to Kids in Need!  All your child has to do is record the books they read at home on the bookmark.  I ask that you initial it and send it back.  It’s that easy!

You can visit www.scholastic.com/ClassroomsCare with your child for more details and fun activities!

Reminders!

Tomorrow is pumpkin math day!  Don't forget to wear clothes that might get a little messy!

Also, students who are wishing to be our class representative needs to have their speeches turned in tomorrow!  We will be holding our election tomorrow!!!!

Our Help is Needed!

Soldiers in the 864th Engineering Battalion need our help!  They are deployed to a remote location in Afghanistan, Combat OutPost Azziz Ullah.  The days are filled with brutal heat and afternoon sandstorms.  Each second grade class will be corresponding with a soldier and will be given the opportunity to send some donations to these amazing men and women.  Our second graders can help by asking family members to donate some items for the soldiers.  Items that they are in need of include:

•       body wash
•       sunscreen
•       deodorant

•       shaving cream
•       tooth brushes
•       toothpaste

•       laundry soap
•       magazines
•       snacks

All items must be to school no later than Friday, October 8th.  The donations will be dropped off Saturday, October 9th to Kensington Community Church so they can get to their destination.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Scholastic Book Orders

OOPS! Scholastic changed the way they do the online ordering. You will set up your own user name and password for yourself, but you will need the activation code in order to do it.

Online Ordering Information
Web address: scholastic.com/bookclubs
Class Activation Code: GYT28

Here's more information about online ordering.

Now it's easier than ever to find the right books for your child — and help us earn FREE books for our classroom library at the same time!

With new online ordering from Scholastic Book Clubs, you can choose from a much wider selection of books than in the printed flyer. Plus, you can send your orders directly to me online and use your credit card.

Best of all, our class earns a FREE book every time a parent places their order online.

It's so simple! Here's how it works:
  • SIGN UP at www.Scholastic.com/bookclubs. On the parent page, click the "Don't have a User Name and Password?" link, then register for your own username and password. When prompted, enter the one-time Class Activation Code shown above. This code ensures that your order is sent to me.

  • SELECT the books you'd like to order from over 500 titles available online...and take advantage of online-only specials and discounts.

  • SEND your order to me online by the due date. Books will be delivered directly to our classroom, as always.

Of course, you can still order using the form from the printed flyer. But why not experience for yourself how convenient it is to order online?

Ordering online is fast, easy, and secure. Plus our whole class benefits thanks to the FREE books we'll earn with every parent online order.

Go to www.Scholastic.com/bookclubs now to get started.

Thanks so much!

Sorry About the Wait...Ta Da!!!

Sorry about the wait, but I think you will be pleased with the result. Please let me know if you have any trouble viewing any of them. There were quite a number of actors and actresses in our class this year! Great job!!! :0) I hope you enjoy... (Sorry, they are a little blurry. I took the video with my actual camera. I guess next time I'll have to use the actual video camera! )

It's A GO!

This Saturday, July 17th, I will be up at school at 11am to do some weeding in the front by the sign and all along the front of the building. The weeds just get on my nerves! I would love the company of my favorite second graders. Afterward, since it's supposed to be pretty warm, I was thinking we could all meet at DQ for a nice refreshing treat. If you are able to join me, please let me know.

If this turns out to be a success, maybe we could meet one more time before the school year begins to clean up Switzer and make it ready for a new school year!

Movie details are to come. I've got calls into MJR and AMC to see if either of them have any summer deals for us. I'll be in touch!

I hope you are all enjoying your summer, it's been a great one so far!! MISS YOU ALL!!

Kickball '10

Here are some pictures from the kickball game earlier this week. The teachers are still undefeated against the sixth graders. I don't know where all the "action" pictures went, but these are still fun!!

It was a fun day! And I know...your teacher's a nerd!! ;)

Party at the Rafflers!

Just a reminder that we are walking over to the Rafflers' house on Monday. Please be sure your child has tennis shoes for the walk. They are allowed to wear their bathing suit underneath their clothes. It would be very helpful if each child could bring a beach towel with them.

I will be providing pizza lunch prior to our walk over. Please be sure to have your child come to school with a drink. They do not need any snacks, as we will be having plenty of "treats" at the party.

I still have not received permission slips from: Alex G, Alex W and Michael. I sent a new one home with each boy. Please make sure to send back the signed permission slip on Monday. Thanks for your help and I hope to see you there!!

Info for the week

Due to the holiday today, there will be no new spelling words this week. Students will continue to practice the words from last week.

Don't forget tomorrow our Ewell friends will be spending the morning with us. Please remember to bring your smiling faces back to school tomorrow.

Here is the latest scoop and the last calendar of the year! Yikes! It's hard to believe we only have 12 1/2 days left. Where did this year go?!

Don't forget Fun Run is Friday morning. If you haven't turned in a permission slip yet, I need one in order to allow your child to participate! I will not be there Friday morning due to a doctor's appointment. Please make sure your permission slip is turned in by Thursday.

Lastly, Dino Dig is Thursday. Money is due by Wednesday. Reminders will be going home tomorrow!

Congratulations!

The top 4 students in each grade that scored the
most points for the year won a certificate. We had two of the top 4
second graders in our class! Great job Haley and Mario!!

Abbie and Alex G. were our Accelerated
Reader winners for the last contest of the year.
They won a lunch with a magician!

Tentative DQ date

I am looking to plan our DQ walk for Monday, June 7th.  I am planning on leaving at 1:00ish.  Please let me know if you think you might be able to help chaperone this event.  Thanks for your help!!

Some Interesting Info!

The Switzer Fun Run will be next Friday, June 4th. We will be running in the morning at 9:30-10:00 Your child needs to have a permission slip on file in order to participate in the Fun Run. Unfortunately, I will not in school that morning. I had a doctor's appointment scheduled for after we got out of school, but my doctor had to reschedule! I apologize for not being there, but hope you understand! :) If you need a copy of the permission slip, click the link and send in as soon as possible!

Also the Dino Dig will be Thursday, June 3rd. The cost of this fun-filled morning is $6.50, please send money in soon and let me know if you are able to volunteer and donate your time that morning! Thanks so much!!

Wednesday, May 19, 2010

Sorry!

I meant to post this earlier in the week, so hopefully your child has already informed you that spelling words are the same this week.  I was out Monday and Tuesday last week for testing and with the field trip on Wednesday, I don't feel the kids got a good grasp on the concept.

In the Dino Dig note that went home today, there was a typo.  The Dino Dig is scheduled for Thursday, June 3rd!!  Please mark your calendars.  If anyone is able to help the morning of, please let me know.

Lastly, next Tuesday is our volunteer luncheon.  Students are asked to show their spirit by wearing baseball attire or baseball uniforms!

Tuesday, May 4, 2010

Tomorrow is ACES (All Children Exercise Simultaneously) day.  In the past, this has been a school-wide event, however, the school is not participating this year.  Since this is an international event to encourage students to be active, I feel it is a great way to promote a healthy lifestyle and fight childhood obesity.  We are going to do something as a class.  Please have your child dress in comfy clothes and tennis shoes, we will be doing an exercise video in class to participate at 10am with students around the world.  If you would like more information about ACES, go to http://lensaunders.com/aces/aces.html
Thanks for your cooperation!

Lots of Stuff!

This past week, Mrs. Bokros and Mrs. Crum had both mentioned to me that our class has been VERY forgetful lately. I spoke to the students and reminded them that it was THEIR responsibility to remember their library books on Tuesdays and their gym shoes on Fridays. Please help your child the night before by reminding them what the next day is and what things they will need. Thanks!

If you have volunteered to chaperone for the field trip, please send in your money! All chaperones are allowed to come along with us. That is one of the many reasons we love visiting Greenfield Village so much. I will be sending a note home next week about carpooling with other parents, but any chaperone wishing to come along is welcome. Just please make sure you have a background check on file. If you are not sure, let me know, I will double check for you!

Also please send me a picture of Mom and student. If a hard copy is sent in, that is the picture the students will be using!

Here is the latest Scoop and May calendar.

I think that's all for now. I hope you all enjoy this day, it's supposed to be nice!!

Some New Info

Mr. Gartland, our reading specialist, came in to work with our class this week and the week before break. The kids worked on questioning and visualizing. These are 2 reading strategies that good readers use. While we were working on questioning, we read an interesting article about a man who trains bugs. You heard me correctly, Steven Kutcher, is a Hollywood "bug" wrangler. The kids loved the article and we tried to access his website but we could not get to it at school. Here is the website so you can check it out with your child at home. home.earthlink.net/~skutcher

Also if you have not already done so, please send in a white cotton t-shirt for your child. We are going to work on tie-dying this Friday afternoon. Please make sure your child's name is on the tag or the bag collar of the shirt. Thanks so much for your cooperation.

I will not be in school Wednesday or Thursday of this week. I have to go to a training course the two days. Ms. Stone will be subbing for us. She has subbed for us a few times in the past. The kids really seem to like her.

Here are this week's words:

Reminder!!

Please remember to return your child's letter to them.  The students will be opening their letters tomorrow in class to see if they have persuaded you or not.

The Friday we get back from break we will be making our tie-dye shirts.  If you are able to volunteer to help that afternoon, that would be GREATLY appreciated.  I plan on starting the tie-dying after lunch at 12:15.  I will be doing other light and color activities that day with the kids.  If you are able to help, please let me know.  Also, please remember to turn in a cotton t-shirt prior to April 16th.  Make sure your child's name is on the tag or collar.  Thanks!!

We are running low on our snack supply in the classroom.  If you are able to donate something to the class: pretzels, Cheezits, animal crackers, etc. are great ways to give students who forget a quick and healthy snack.  Thanks!

I hope you all have a wonderful and safe spring break.  Enjoy your time off and/or away!

Lastly, next Friday is the Read In in the evening. I will be a "celebrity" reader from 7:20-7:35. I believe the celebrity readers will be "performing" in the library. I hope to see you there!!

Have a great weekend! Enjoy the nice weather while it lasts!!

Leprechauns on the Loose!

Well, we had a little excitement in the room today. The kids went to music and then we all rushed out to recess. When we came back in, we had discovered that our room was messed up by some leprechauns! Can you believe it? They left us some green drink and even messed with some of the students by turning their desks around. We knew it had to be leprechauns because of the gold glitter left and some kids found footprints! It was a crazy afternoon!

Haley's desk was one of the few that were messed up!
Abbie's desk was disturbed too. She kept saying, "I can't believe leprechauns were really here?!"
Jack's desk was the first one we discovered!
Sneaky leprechauns!!

Also, if you are able to participate as a guest reader this month, we would love to have you.  Just return the note so I can plan accordingly to our guest readers!!

Valentine's Week

Our Valentine’s Day party will be this Friday, February 12th. I usually have a low-key party due to the vacation following. In the past, I have always had an ice cream party. However, due to allergies, this year, I have decided to have their Slurpee reward instead. If you are able to donate something like pretzels, Cheez-its, animal crackers, or any other peanut-tree nut free snack, please let me know. Students can bring in cards made out to their classmates and don’t forget your handcrafted Valentine’s mailboxes that day. After students pass out their cards, we will watch a movie and enjoy our Slurpees. Thanks for your cooperation!

Also, all students will have the same spelling words this week and the week after break. Here is this week's list.
Suffixes

And I kept forgetting, but here it is for those who need it, the February calendar.

Don't forget the Lion's assembly is tomorrow. Have your child wear anything Lions, football or blue! It should be fun, I'm excited!!

Lions Rescheduled!

The Lion's assembly will be on Monday, February 8th.  Same time, 2:15-3:00.  If your child is signed up for the camp, it will begin right after school.

Reward Day Tomorrow!

Congratulations to our class.  They have achieved in filling our jar of marbles.  The students have decided to have a “Game Day.”  This will take place TOMORROW.  Please have your child send in their favorite board game in a bag, we will spend the afternoon playing games together.  Please do not send anything in that has a lot of little pieces, they sometimes get misplaced!  I will allow the students to bring in a DSi after they have played a board game for a while.  BUT in order to play the DSi, they must have brought a board game to play first.  This is the first time I am allowing video games.  We will see how it goes.  Please make sure games are appropriate for school.  The students also wanted to make this day a twin day.

Tuesday, February 2, 2010

Lion's Assembly

Tomorrow's assembly is cancelled!  The director is out sick. Mrs. Crum will be rescheduling.  I will let you know when that is finalized!!  The camp afterwards will be rescheduled as well.

Show Your Spirit!

Tomorrow is our Lions assembly!  I am so excited.  I think Roary, the Lion's mascot will be here!  Have your child show their school spirit by wearing Lion's gear or any football shirts!  It should be a fun afternoon.

Also, this Thursday is Academic Blitz.  Students are encouraged to wear college gear.  Teachers will be sharing a little bit of why college is so important with students.  And we will be decked out in the college we all went to!  The next couple of days will be pretty fun!!

Valentine Homework

Students are asked to design their own Valentine mailbox for our Valentine's Day party.  This box can be a shoebox, cereal box, and clothing box, whatever.  Since students have so much academic homework, we thought it would be fun to be creative!  Decorate your box to match your child’s personality, interests, etc.  Have fun!  Please have them turned in by Friday, February 12th.

I had every intention to include the February calendar with this post, but I forgot to upload it from school before I left. So I'll have that up here on Monday. Have a great weekend. STAY WARM!

Extra Decks?

We have started something new with math.  Each Friday the kids will spend our math time playing math games that reinforce concepts that have been previously taught or that are being studied at that time.  We have done this the last two weeks and the students are having a ball with it!  I was wondering if any of you had any extra decks of cards that could be donated to the classroom.  One of the games I am hoping to play with the kids is played in pairs with a deck of cards.  Thanks so much!!

New Words and Report Cards

Students all brought their report cards home today. Please remember this is a developmental report card. Seeing many 2's and some 3's is still very common in second grade. 3's mean your child is working on developing that particular skill and still hasn't quite achieved an overall understanding of the subject. If you have any questions about the report card, please let me know. After looking at them, please sign the envelope and send it back to school ASAP. Thanks so much.

Here are the new words for the week.

Haley's BIG Donation!

Haley made a big donation a few weeks back. After a long battle of trying to "persuade" her mom into allowing her to cut many inches off her hair, she finally convinced her mom. She cut off more than 9 inches of hair and donated it to Locks for Love. This is a charity that takes hair donations to make wigs for children with cancer. Not only does Haley's new haircut look super cute, she made a big difference in another child's life. That's amazing Haley!

PJ Day and Gym!

Even though it is a half day tomorrow, we will still be having our gym class.  Please make sure your child has their gym shoes.  Mrs. Crum mentioned to me that we have many kids who forget their gym shoes each week.  Those kids typically aren't allowed to participate in gym those days.  Also, tomorrow is pj day.  Show your school spirit and come to school in your pjs!  :)

We Made Gas!

Today the students were learning about gases.  I taught them that the atoms in a gas are moving around really fast and there is a lot of space between all the atoms.  I then showed them a chemical reaction that produced gas and it blew up a balloon.  The kids loved the experiment and I told them I would post it up here.  They would need YOUR permission and help to do this at home.

All you'll need is a bottle (empty water, pop or adult beverage bottle is fine), white vinegar, balloon and baking soda.

Fill bottle with the vinegar.  Carefully put the baking soda into the balloon.  Attach the balloon to the top of the bottle and dump the baking soda into the vinegar and viola!  You made a gas!  Have fun!!

Welcome Back!

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season with your loved ones. It's hard to believe we are already in 2010. Yikes!

The students had a great first day back, it was business as usual. Students were excited to share some of their favorite gifts from Christmas. I learned a lot! If your child forgot to bring in something today, I told them they could share tomorrow at the very end of the day.

Here is the January calendar with the helper schedule and all the happenings for the month.

This weeks Spelling words are linked below as well.

Be on the look out!!! Students will be bringing home their next big homework project on Thursday. This will be a personal timeline project. After the students bring home the project, I will post some of the essential information on the blog.

It was a great first day back!
