Cell Phones for Soldiers

Switzer has taken on a whole school challenge.  We are trying to collect cell phones for soldiers.  These cell phones will not be used by the soldiers.  They will, however, be recycled and the money goes to buy  calling cards so soldiers overseas can talk to loved ones back home.  This is the perfect time of year for this!

Cell phones do not have to work, in fact, they shouldn't be in working condition!  You can throw in the chargers, too!  On top of that old pagers are accepted, as well!   So ask your neighbors, ask your family members, ask the people at work.  Everyone has an old cell phone lying around somewhere!  When you collect them, simply have your child bring them to school and they will go into our classroom box.

The contest will run from Nov. 14- Jan. 13th.  Please help us out!  If we collect 1,000 phones as a school, we will win a school-wide pizza party.  If we don't make that number as a school, the top classroom will be the winner of the pizza party.

Thanks for your help!  :0)

Tuesday- favorite hat for "Put a CAP on Drugs!"
Wednesday- crazy hair day for "Use Your Head, Don't Do Drugs"
Thursday- wear clothes backwards for "Turn Your Back on Drugs"

Class Reward

Congratulations to our class.  They have achieved in filling our jar of marbles.  The students have decided to have a “Read In.”  This will take place tomorrow, Friday, October 21st.  Please have your child bring in a sleeping bag, and/or pillow and any favorite books from home.  We will move all the tables aside and lay out the sleeping bags and pillows while everyone enjoys an afternoon of reading.  The students would also like to have a pajama day that day also, so please have your child dress in pj’s to show their class spirit!

Oops!

There was a typo on the Christmas note that went home today.  The money is due by Friday, October 21st!  Thanks.  I reposted the note below.

In 2nd Grade, we make an extra special gift for our parents.  This gift is a secret gift so please do not ask them what they are making.  We have told them to keep this gift making to themselves – so no trying to get it out of them!!   :)  We want you to be surprised on Christmas!

To help cover the cost of the gift, we are asking each family to send in $5.50 by Friday, October 21st. The money will go towards the making of this great surprise!  Sorry for the short notice, however, if we have our order in to the company by Nov. 4th, we save on Shipping and Handling charges plus we get a 10% discount on the order!  Too good of a deal to pass up!!!  Thanks for understanding!

Also, book orders are due by Monday!  Thanks!!

Hi!  I just wanted you to know that I had EVERY intention of having the first batch of bi-weekly notes done, but somehow the week got away from me.  I will finish them up over the weekend and send them home on Monday.  Thank you for your understanding.

Also, MEAP testing will start next week.  Due to that our specials will be jumbled a little for the next 3 weeks.  Instead of having research center in the afternoon on Wednesdays, we will have it at 9:40-10:40 on Wednesday mornings.  I just wanted to make you aware of this change.

Have a great weekend!

Students Who Play School

Frequently, throughout the year, I will ask students who like to play school if they would like handouts.  These handouts are sheets we didn't do from math or copies I never got around to completing.  Instead of throwing them out, I give them to the kids to play school at home.  These are NOT to be completed.  They are just for fun.  Typically when they come home, you will see a few of the same sheet.  If you are ever unsure if it was a school friend worksheet or homework, please feel free to contact me!  Thanks!!

A Yard of Me Directions

This is a project to help the students and I learn more about each other. Each student will bring home a premade yard of paper. Here are the directions for each section.

4 inch x 12 inch- Name
6 inch x 12 inch- Picture of your family. (Be sure to label everyone!)
6 inch x 12 inch- Favorite thing to do
4 inch x 12 inch- Favorite color and number
6 inch x 12 inch- Favorite food
6 inch x 12 inch- A place you love or would love to visit
4 inch x 12 inch- Favorite book

Along with a picture, students are encouraged to write a sentence to go with each section. After all of these are turned in, students will share their yard of me with the class! Even your teacher will be sharing one.

These are due: Monday, October 10th.

Here is an example of a completed example.

Weekend Updates

Your child should have brought home their first homework project.  These will be due on Monday, October 10th.  I will be uploading the directions and a picture example when I get home later today.

Here are the October Happenings calendar and the October Helpers calendar.  I think I have included everyone who wanted to help out.  If not, please let me know and I can add you.  I am looking for some help on Tuesdays for our Fun with Math afternoon.  See the Scoop for more information.

Spelling City has been updated with your child's words for next week.  Feel free to start practicing with them now.  I will go over and introduce the words on Monday.

Also, Monday is a Tiger Play-off game.  Switzer students are encouraged to show their Tiger spirit by wearing their Tiger's gear and/or blue and orange.  They can wear a hat, jersey, sweatshirt, whatever...Show their spirit!!  Eat 'em Up Tigers, Eat 'em Up!

I hope everyone has a great weekend.

(I couldn't upload the calendars.  I will have to wait til I get back to school to try to send them to myself again.  Sorry for any inconvenience.)

Accelerated Reader and More

I just found out that the AR program is not fully working properly yet.  I allowed a couple students to take their tests yesterday before I learned this.  Mrs. Bokros is hopeful the problem should be worked out by Monday, so I will hold off allowing students to take AR tests until Monday.  Thank you for your understanding.

Also, I will be uploading some of the Back to School Paperwork that some students are missing.

If you are missing your gym or HIV form, click on the link.  Please turn these in as soon as possible.  Thanks so much!

Have a great weekend.  I will see you all on Monday!

Friendly Reminder

If you have not done so already, please be sure to turn in all of your child's important back to school paperwork.  I told the kids if I have everyones by Friday, they will get an extra recess.  There are still a few students who are in need of headphones, an activity book, as well as the $4.25 for our Weekly Reader subscription.  If you could get these items in as soon as possible, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Welcome!

What a week!  Phew!  We made it!  It was great getting to meet all the new students in Room 5.  We are going to have a great year.  I haven't had a chance to take a new picture with the whole class.  The weather this week has been so yucky!  Hopefully I will be able to get one next week and I can update the title on the blog.

Please note I have changed our specials over on the right side to reflect our new schedule for the 2011-2012 school year.

Book orders are due Friday, September 16th.  Please feel free to order online though!  So fast and easy!  Our activation code is: GYT28.

Please note that the outdoor movie night was postponed due to the yucky weather.  It is rescheduled for Friday, September 16th.  I hope to see you there!

I have a HUGE request for parents that were at the first session of Open House and any parents that couldn't make it...Please send me an email with your child's name and your name so that I can add you to our email distribution list.  Thanks so much!

It has been a great start to a great year!
