Just wanted to remind everyone that our holiday party is still on for tomorrow, Tuesday, December 21st from 1:30-3 in the afternoon. If you have not done so yet, please remember to send in a wrapped activity book, crayons/colored pencils/markers for our book exchange. Tomorrow's party!!

Oops! Forgot!
Sorry! I forgot to mention this in the last email. I checked some of the kids on spelling concepts that were taught throughout the year. I am using this to help students practice skills that may be still confusing to them.
Group A will be having a spelling test on Monday with the same words from last week. I want to make sure they "get" the concept and most kids in this group didn't do so hot on the test last week. All other groups do not have spelling words this week, so there will not be a test.
As mentioned at conferences, I will be retesting all the kids with the 25 word "test" to help me dig a little deeper. It will pinpoint exactly what concepts are solid and which need to be retaught or practiced some more. After the new year, some spelling groups might change due to the progress of the kids. I hope this clarifies any confusion over spelling and I will update you as to how your child did after the first of the year.
Thanks!!
Important Info
There are a couple important bits of info for the week...
Tomorrow is a Switzer Spirit Day, have your child wear their Santa hat, Rudolph antlers, Christmas headbands, or anything else that might show their Christmas spirit. Also, tomorrow afternoon we will be having a game day celebration to celebrate filling the marble jar. Please send in a board game or card game for your child to play in the afternoon. We will be doing no video games this time around.
Also, please don't forget that Tuesday will be our Christmas party. Send in a wrapped activity book with crayons, markers or colored pencils. We will be doing an exchange on Tuesday during our party. If you can send them in on Monday, that would be great!
Lastly, your child brought home a math review for the math test tomorrow. They are only required to do the red side of each paper.
Thanks so much!!

Christmas Surprise!
It is hard to believe but the holiday season is almost here! With Thanksgiving just weeks away, Christmas will be here before we know it!
In 2nd grade, we make an extra special gift for our parents. This gift is a secret gift, so please don't ask them what they are making! We have told them to keep this gift to themselves- so no trying to get it out of them!! ;0) We want you to be surprised on Christmas Day!
To help cover the cost of the gift, we are asking each family to send in $5.50 by Monday, November 15th. The money will go towards the making of this great surprise. Sorry for the short notice, however, if we have our order in to the company by November 19th, we save on Shipping and Handling charges, plus we get a 10% discount on the whole order! Too good of a deal to pass up!! Thanks for understanding!!!

Bi-weekly Notes
Due to conferences and report cards, your child will not be receiving a bi-weekly note for the next couple weeks. They will resume the week after Thanksgiving. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation!
I look forward to seeing all of you next week for conferences. Please remember to send back the signed portion of the note so that I know the scheduled time works for you. Thanks again!

Classrooms Care
We had the opportunity to watch the Taylor Swift webinar today at school. She challenged students and classrooms to take the Classrooms Care Challenge. It is a literacy campaign to motivate students to read, as well as teach them the importance of giving.
Every student is challenged to read 10 books at home by Dec. 17th. When they have finished, Scholastic Book Clubs and its charity partners will donate ONE MILLION BOOKS to Kids in Need! All your child has to do is record the books they read at home on the bookmark. I ask that you initial it and send it back. Its that easy!
You can visit www.scholastic.com/ClassroomsCare with your child for more details and fun activities!
Reminders!
Tomorrow is pumpkin math day! Don't forget to wear clothes that might get a little messy!
Also, students who are wishing to be our class representative needs to have their speeches turned in tomorrow! We will be holding our election tomorrow!!!!

Our Help is Needed!
Soldiers in the 864th Engineering Battalion need our help! They are deployed to a remote location in Afghanistan, Combat OutPost Azziz Ullah. The days are filled with brutal heat and afternoon sandstorms. Each second grade class will be corresponding with a soldier and will be given the opportunity to send some donations to these amazing men and women. Our second graders can help by asking family members to donate some items for the soldiers. Items that they are in need of include:
body wash
sunscreen
deodorant
shaving cream
tooth brushes
toothpaste
laundry soap
magazines
snacks
All items must be to school no later than Friday, October 8th. The donations will be dropped off Saturday, October 9th to Kensington Community Church so they can get to their destination.
Thank you in advance for your help!

Scholastic Book Orders
Online Ordering Information
Web address: scholastic.com/bookclubs
Class Activation Code: GYT28
Here's more information about online ordering.
Now it's easier than ever to find the right books for your child — and help us earn FREE books for our classroom library at the same time!
With new online ordering from Scholastic Book Clubs, you can choose from a much wider selection of books than in the printed flyer. Plus, you can send your orders directly to me online and use your credit card.
Best of all, our class earns a FREE book every time a parent places their order online.
It's so simple! Here's how it works:
- SIGN UP at www.Scholastic.com/bookclubs. On the parent page, click the "Don't have a User Name and Password?" link, then register for your own username and password. When prompted, enter the one-time Class Activation Code shown above. This code ensures that your order is sent to me.
- SELECT the books you'd like to order from over 500 titles available online...and take advantage of online-only specials and discounts.
- SEND your order to me online by the due date. Books will be delivered directly to our classroom, as always.
Of course, you can still order using the form from the printed flyer. But why not experience for yourself how convenient it is to order online?
Ordering online is fast, easy, and secure. Plus our whole class benefits thanks to the FREE books we'll earn with every parent online order.
Go to www.Scholastic.com/bookclubs now to get started.
Thanks so much!

The Switzer Fun Run will be next Friday, June 4th. We will be running in the morning at 9:30-10:00 Your child needs to have a permission slip on file in order to participate in the Fun Run. Sorry!
I meant to post this earlier in the week, so hopefully your child has already informed you that spelling words are the same this week. I was out Monday and Tuesday last week for testing and with the field trip on Wednesday, I don't feel the kids got a good grasp on the concept.
In the Dino Dig note that went home today, there was a typo. The Dino Dig is scheduled for Thursday, June 3rd!! Please mark your calendars. If anyone is able to help the morning of, please let me know.
Lastly, next Tuesday is our volunteer luncheon. Students are asked to show their spirit by wearing baseball attire or baseball uniforms!
Tuesday, May 4, 2010
Tomorrow is ACES (All Children Exercise Simultaneously) day. In the past, this has been a school-wide event, however, the school is not participating this year. Since this is an international event to encourage students to be active, I feel it is a great way to promote a healthy lifestyle and fight childhood obesity. We are going to do something as a class. Please have your child dress in comfy clothes and tennis shoes, we will be doing an exercise video in class to participate at 10am with students around the world. If you would like more information about ACES, go to http://lensaunders.com/aces/aces.html.
Thanks for your cooperation!

Lots of Stuff!
If you have volunteered to chaperone for the field trip, please send in your money! All chaperones are allowed to come along with us. That is one of the many reasons we love visiting Greenfield Village so much. I will be sending a note home next week about carpooling with other parents, but any chaperone wishing to come along is welcome. Just please make sure you have a background check on file. If you are not sure, let me know, I will double check for you!
Also please send me a picture of Mom and student. If a hard copy is sent in, that is the picture the students will be using!
Here is the latest Scoop and May calendar.
I think that's all for now. I hope you all enjoy this day, it's supposed to be nice!!

Some New Info
Mr. Gartland, our reading specialist, came in to work with our class this week and the week before break. The kids worked on questioning and visualizing. These are 2 reading strategies that good readers use. While we were working on questioning, we read an interesting article about a man who trains bugs. You heard me correctly, Steven Kutcher, is a Hollywood "bug" wrangler. The kids loved the article and we tried to access his website but we could not get to it at school. Here is the website so you can check it out with your child at home. home.earthlink.net/~skutcher
Also if you have not already done so, please send in a white cotton t-shirt for your child. We are going to work on tie-dying this Friday afternoon. Please make sure your child's name is on the tag or the bag collar of the shirt. Thanks so much for your cooperation.
I will not be in school Wednesday or Thursday of this week. I have to go to a training course the two days. Ms. Stone will be subbing for us. She has subbed for us a few times in the past. The kids really seem to like her.

Reminder!!
Please remember to return your child's letter to them. The students will be opening their letters tomorrow in class to see if they have persuaded you or not.
The Friday we get back from break we will be making our tie-dye shirts. If you are able to volunteer to help that afternoon, that would be GREATLY appreciated. I plan on starting the tie-dying after lunch at 12:15. I will be doing other light and color activities that day with the kids. If you are able to help, please let me know. Also, please remember to turn in a cotton t-shirt prior to April 16th. Make sure your child's name is on the tag or collar. Thanks!!
We are running low on our snack supply in the classroom. If you are able to donate something to the class: pretzels, Cheezits, animal crackers, etc. are great ways to give students who forget a quick and healthy snack. Thanks!
I hope you all have a wonderful and safe spring break. Enjoy your time off and/or away!

Lions Rescheduled!
The Lion's assembly will be on Monday, February 8th. Same time, 2:15-3:00. If your child is signed up for the camp, it will begin right after school.
Reward Day Tomorrow!
Congratulations to our class. They have achieved in filling our jar of marbles. The students have decided to have a Game Day. This will take place TOMORROW. Please have your child send in their favorite board game in a bag, we will spend the afternoon playing games together. Please do not send anything in that has a lot of little pieces, they sometimes get misplaced! I will allow the students to bring in a DSi after they have played a board game for a while. BUT in order to play the DSi, they must have brought a board game to play first. This is the first time I am allowing video games. We will see how it goes. Please make sure games are appropriate for school. The students also wanted to make this day a twin day.

Students are asked to design their own Valentine mailbox for our Valentine's Day party. This box can be a shoebox, cereal box, and clothing box, whatever. Since students have so much academic homework, we thought it would be fun to be creative! Decorate your box to match your childs personality, interests, etc. Have fun! Please have them turned in by Friday, February 12th.

Extra Decks?
We have started something new with math. Each Friday the kids will spend our math time playing math games that reinforce concepts that have been previously taught or that are being studied at that time. We have done this the last two weeks and the students are having a ball with it! I was wondering if any of you had any extra decks of cards that could be donated to the classroom. One of the games I am hoping to play with the kids is played in pairs with a deck of cards. Thanks so much!!

We Made Gas!
Today the students were learning about gases. I taught them that the atoms in a gas are moving around really fast and there is a lot of space between all the atoms. I then showed them a chemical reaction that produced gas and it blew up a balloon. The kids loved the experiment and I told them I would post it up here. They would need YOUR permission and help to do this at home.
All you'll need is a bottle (empty water, pop or adult beverage bottle is fine), white vinegar, balloon and baking soda.
Fill bottle with the vinegar. Carefully put the baking soda into the balloon. Attach the balloon to the top of the bottle and dump the baking soda into the vinegar and viola! You made a gas! Have fun!!
