Students will put their headers at the top, with the rest of the words below spread out so students can read them.
In most cases, students will have an example word that shows the students an example of that pattern.
This is where some help is needed. Someone needs to read a word to the student that is in the bottom group. The student will locate the word, then place the word where it belongs based on it's sound and pattern. For example, if the word BLURT were read, it would go under the UR pattern. The words PURR and WERE would go into the oddball column.
